I Can't Get My Children to Go to Bed

Carol dreads bedtime in her house. She has a daughter, Heather, four years old, and a son, Thomas, who's just turned seven. Most nights in Carol's house her kids are rowdy and uncooperative. No matter how many times she reminds them of bedtime, they don't get ready for bed. When she says, "Now it's time for bed," Heather begins to cry and Thomas runs and hides. It seems to Carol that they won't do anything unless she screams at them. When she finally does manage to get them in their rooms, they both cry and say they are scared. This makes Carol feel angry and guilty. It's at this time of day that Carol wants to go to bed herself and enjoy some quiet time.

For many parents, the routine of getting children to bed at night can be the day's biggest challenge. Many parents would agree that children are in much better moods during the day with a sufficient night's sleep, and many times parents most want children to comply with a proper bedtime. A child may look and act tired, but may still battle to stay awake. This is because children are curious by nature and don't want to miss anything that's happening around them. In addition, a child's brain development and function are at a stage that's very sensitive to the child's surroundings.

A parent's first goal for bedtime is a consistent routine. A regular bedtime routine, repeated at the same time every night, is essential for creating good sleep habits. The routine should be gentle, but firm. Consistency is vital. A child's room at this time of the day should be quiet and relaxing, surely free from loud music, TV or video games. These things, while seemingly fun and time consuming for your child, are stimulating his or her brain in ways that are not conducive to relaxation. Even rough and tumble play can stimulate a child to the point of needing more time to calm down.

Parents should also expect "delay tactics" from children at bedtime. Needing another drink, having to go to the bathroom, or other time wasting activity is expected from children, in an attempt to squeeze just five more minutes into their day. Parents will find benefit in setting limits on these types of delay tactics, without threats or emotional outburst. Discussing with children during the day (not at bedtime when they are demanding another drink of water) what is and what is not appropriate, may help prevent some power struggles at night. Freely discussing with children appropriate consequences of misbehavior at bedtime (perhaps only one bedtime story instead of two) or healthy incentives for compliance (15 more minutes to read a book, or half hour later bedtime on weekends for examples).

Bedtime can be a time for healthy bonding between parent and child. With firm limits set and consistent routine, a parent can use this time to strengthen the relationship with his or her child. Whether reading a book together, or discussing the day's events, a child will benefit tremendously with this one-on-one time spent. For parents with multiple children, much patience and support is needed. Healthy structure, with consistency, will help establish a calmer and more relaxed bedtime routine.
